Northlight Artspace
At Northlight you can join a class but you can also come and take part in or visit
extra events such as Exhibitions, Artists Talks, ‘Show and Tell’ Evenings and Fairs
Artspace is the name that we have given to our multifunctional ground floor space. As well as a light teaching space the room is often transformed into a bright gallery and Exhibition Space. Our termly programme often includes exhibitions from guest artists. We usually have a preview evening on a Friday followed by the exhibition which is open to all over a weekend.
We also use this space for Artists Talks which are open to all students and the public usually on a Friday evening once a term. Artists may share their own work or give an illustrated talk on the work of a particular person or movement. Open discussion follows, plus an opportunity to socialise with a glass of wine.
‘Show and Tell’ Evenings take place usually once a term, again on a Friday evening - where our resident studio artist and students informally share what they are currently working on over a glass of wine. It’s an informal and safe place to talk about your work and receive feedback. The sessions are open to all - why don’t you come along and see - you don’t need to show your work you can just listen and ask questions.

EXHIBITION
OF ICE AND FIRE
by Steve Morgan
Industry and Climate Change.
A photography exhibition.
Fri 30th May - Opening Night 7pm - 9pm
Sat 31st and Sun 1st June 11am - 5pm
An abstract view of the conflicts of industrial production and climate change.
Steelmaking, the fiery process that underpins and is vital to modern life, comes with a huge cost to the climate. Greenhouse gases gush from the burning fossil fuels that drive 1600°C blast furnaces and melt raw iron ore. Purifying the molten ore by mixing it with refined coal, or coke, releases a second, bigger surge of carbon dioxide. A third stream comes when the resulting pig iron is turned into steel by cooking it a bit further—baking off most of the remaining carbon— and alloying it with additives such as chromium or titanium.
In the end, the emitted greenhouse gases weigh roughly twice as much as the steel itself. Nearly 2 billion tons of steel is produced worldwide each year, accounting for about 7% of human greenhouse gas emissions, more than the entire European Union.
Steel is the planet’s largest carbon-emitting manufacturing sector, making it an immediate
global priority for decarbonization.
The steel industry is currently grappling with and finding solutions to the challenges set by
legally binding targets to achieve net zero emissions .
This exhibition takes an abstract look at some of the coldest places on the Earth and one of the most energy intensive and hottest production processes in industry.
These images are from the Arctic and Antarctic regions taken during campaigns I have
undertaken with Greenpeace. The steel industry images form part of my commercial work taken over the years in the UK and Europe
