Northlight Artspace
At Northlight you can join a class but you can also come and take part in or visit
extra events such as Exhibitions, Artists Talks, ‘Show and Tell’ Evenings and Fairs
Artspace is the name that we have given to our multifunctional ground floor space. As well as a light teaching space the room is often transformed into a bright gallery and Exhibition Space. Our termly programme often includes exhibitions from guest artists. We usually have a preview evening on a Friday followed by the exhibition which is open to all over a weekend.
We also use this space for Artists Talks which are open to all students and the public usually on a Friday evening once a term. Artists may share their own work or give an illustrated talk on the work of a particular person or movement. Open discussion follows, plus an opportunity to socialise with a glass of wine.
‘Show and Tell’ Evenings take place usually once a term, again on a Friday evening - where our resident studio artist and students informally share what they are currently working on over a glass of wine. It’s an informal and safe place to talk about your work and receive feedback. The sessions are open to all - why don’t you come along and see - you don’t need to show your work you can just listen and ask questions.

Claire Murray - ‘A Light To My Path’
Friday 5th June 2026 7pm to 9pm
Claire Murray’s paintings explore the world around us and endeavour to understand the systems and natural order of our existence. She is particularly inspired by the landscape, its geography, topography, light, colour, texture and sense of place and space.
As a visual artist, the physical natural environment provides Claire with a wealth of visual stimuli which feed her mental and imaginative landscapes. She does not work to ‘represent’ a place but rather to ‘inhabit’ that space within a painting.
Natural elements derived from the landscape are fundamental to Claire’s work. She interprets organic textures, light and shade, line and form to underpin her paintings, serving as a reminder of our place within the natural order. She is particularly drawn to the drama of the northern landscape, where grit, rock and earth contrast with sea, river and air. She explores the vastness of the landscape, examining scale, distance and depth while also finding great power and significance in the microscopic detail of nature.
Claire Murray is an expressive painter based in Fletcher’s Mill, Dean Clough in Halifax. She has been painting for 37 years, teaching art and running her own studio practice. Her work is held in private collections internationally.
