Paula Chambers: PRECIOUS
June 7th to July 27th 2008
An installation in three parts: a room packed with hundreds of baby clothes like bunting in a Cuban street and dense with the synthetic scent of cleaning agents; a pram exalted to the status of a throne; 2nd-hand toys that have been immolated in gold leaf. ‘Precious’ is an installation that hints at the paradoxical way we value children; yet smother childhood, and ignore the effect of poverty on maternity in the developing world.

The Sensation of Colour

"My work attempts to utilise colour as a dynamic, expressive force exploring the symbolic nature of colour, eg blue to suggest the spiritual nature, red to suggest the physical, yellow/oranges to promote feelings of well-being and greens for growth and renewal.  The intention of the exhibition is to enliven the space with pure colour to create an uplifting experience, connecting with the senses in a direct, emotional way. Work produced for this exhibition explores a new dimension beyond painting, taking the intensity of pure colour into 3d space with assemblages and layered transparent perspex panels, creating a walk in ‘environment’ of colour."
