Approaches to Landscape: outdoor sketching and printmaking
July 30th – Aug 1st  
Working with painter Mary Loney and printmaker Angie Rogers you will spend a day sketching outdoors and then interpret your sketches  through simple printmaking approaches

Aimed at those who are keen to continue their art practice but would benefit from a supportive group environment.
These sessions are untaught but are supported by our course tutors.  Bring along your work,  discuss, share and practice. 

 

 

UCAN!  The Upper Calder Artist Network

This exciting opportunity aims to help visual artists, craftspeople  and the public to better share and receive information, and help artists to form stronger exhibiting, training or employment opportunities.
Through an Arts Council  Grant for the Arts Northlight have contracted two independent arts consultants to create a strategy and vision which can make this Network both useful and sustainable. The consultants will be working on this part-time until November
2010.
The aim of the consultants will be to identify and consult with creative people and organisations, together with the wider community in the Upper Calder Valley, and find out what their shared and individual needs from a Network might be.
They also hope to be able to identify funding opportunities, put together a project plan, set up an online blog or chat forum for artists to use, and establish a steering committee for the initiative to develop and thrive.
The consultants, Charlotte Derry and Claire Tymon, have been employed by Northlight Studios to carry out this work .

Northlight Art Studios Ltd provide good quality space, facilities and resources in an inclusive and supportive environment for artists and makers in the Upper Calder Valley. We help create opportunities for members working collectively and individually and engage closely with the local community through open studio events, creative projects and education courses.

Formed in 1989, Northlight has recently taken huge steps to enlarge its activity.  With the aid of an Arts Council grant we have moved to new, much improved premises, incorporating a gallery, dedicated ceramics area, an outdoor courtyard and improved access.  We have increased our resident artist numbers to 26 and have now become a fully fledged artist co-operative.   We have now introduced an associate member scheme.

Studio sizes vary from 6.4m2 to 20 m2 with the opportunity to share. Most of our spaces are 'open plan', contributing to our co-operative spirit.  Five studios in our annex unit have lockable doors.  Studio members can share kitchen, computer, internet and photography and information resource facilities. Studio space in Hebden Bridge is in high demand and we have a growing waiting list. We invite committed artists and craftspeople to apply to join our waiting list.  Please email for an application form. studios

The Back Door

In our new flexible ground floor area, we have developed an education strand to our activity - giving the larger community the chance to benefit from the considerable skills of our 26 artists.

The 'Back Door' project has been a great success and in our second year we have added additional improvers classes, specialised day workshops and weekend courses.
